The St. David's Nurse Residency Program

The St. David's Nurse Residency is a year-long program for new RN’s that is utilized to efficiently and effectively orient the new RN to bedside nursing practice. The RN Residency is offered six times a year in the spring, summer, and fall. This successful Residency supports the Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing recommendation to implement nurse residency programs. In addition, the Residency framework is based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Benner’s Novice to Expert Continuum, and Bloom’s Cognitive Domains.

The initial onboarding is 10 to 13 weeks long, and is meant to ease the transition from student to professional nurse. Included in the Residency are interactive and dynamic lectures from clinical experts, simulation, and guided orientation on the unit by a trained preceptor. Classes cover a wide variety of topics, presenting students the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and share experiences with fellow nurses.  After an initial three week on-boarding, the majority of time will be spent on the unit of hire, with a trained preceptor.

Months 4-12 of the St. David's Residency are devoted to the RN Resident's professional development. Each RN Resident is paired with a trained mentor, attends monthly seminars of varying topics, explores a variety of clinical roles, as well as completes an evidence-based capstone project prior to their graduation.
